Our Chapter History
In 1926, a pivotal moment unfolded in St. Louis with the chartering of the Lambda Sigma Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. This strategic endeavor, spearheaded by our esteemed Founder Madree Penn White in collaboration with charter members Golda Crutcher, Elizabeth Gross, Helen Lucas, and Imogene Wilson from Delta Chapter, laid the foundation for a legacy of impactful service and sisterhood.
These visionary women, including Sorors Helen Lucas and Elizabeth Gross Green, whose early leadership at the University of Iowa included establishing the first Delta House, brought a profound commitment to advancing Black women. Their collective vision materialized in Lambda Sigma, a chapter poised to address the evolving needs of the St. Louis community.
As our Sorority expanded its national footprint, Lambda Sigma embraced its identity as the Saint Louis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., (SLA-DST), a testament to our enduring presence and deepening roots within the metropolitan area. Today, our chapter comprises over 500 dedicated members, a collective of accomplished women driving transformative initiatives aligned with Delta Sigma Theta’s Five-Point Programmatic Thrust: Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement.
SLA-DST Chapter has several signature events: The Ariya Rites of Passage Program, Breakfast with Santa, and The Ida Goodwin Woolfolk Memorial Brunch, a partnership with the St. Louis Delta Foundation.
The history of the Saint Louis Alumnae Chapter is a compelling narrative of vision, dedication, and unwavering commitment to our community. We stand proudly on the shoulders of our founders, continuing their inspiring work and shaping a future defined by impactful service and enduring sisterhood.
The Saint Louis Alumnae Chapter follows the tenets of Sisterhood, Scholarship, Service, and Social Action.
